The invention relates to a method for operating a fuel cell system. Said system comprises a fuel cell unit, which is supplied with fuel and an oxidant, in addition to a gas generation system, in which the fuel is obtained from the combustion agent and is cleaned in subsequent components. To initiate the system, in a first phase, a combustion agent is supplied to the reforming reactor and fuel is produced from said agent. The reforming reactor, which is at least partially filled with fuel is intermittently impinged by oxygen and the fuel is burnt catalytically in the reforming reactor, whereby said reactor heats up to an operating temperature.
