A press comprises a bed, a slide mounted for reciprocating movement with respect to the bed, a die carrier, means for mounting the die carrier for movement from a position outside the press to a position within the press above the bed, clamping means, means for lowering the carrier into engagement with the press bed and means for concomitantly actuating the lowering means and the clamping means. In an embodiment a press 10 is provided with a pair of tracks 34, 36, Fig. 1, for supporting one or two carrier rings 38 to which is secured a bolster plate 40 carrying a die set including a lower die 42 and an upper die 44. The carrier ring within the press is secured to the press bed 20 by a plurality of hydraulic clamps 48, the arms 114 of which engage lugs 66 on the carrier rings, Fig. 5. The press slide is lowered to a position at which the upper die 44 can be secured to the slide by clamping arms 50. Stops located on the press bed engage their respective carrier rings and locate them in the press. The clamping arms are provided with a block portion carrying a track section 108 adapted to move into an opening 110 in the bed 20 and into alignment with the tracks, Fig. 6. The clamps are actuated by an hydraulic control valve actuated by solenoid switches energized by a carrier ring as it moves into the press. In operation, to make a quick die change, the upper die 44 is disengaged from the slide 32 by releasing the clamps 50 and moving the slide 32 upwardly. A push-button is actuated to supply fluid pressure to the clamp cylinders to move the clamps and their track sections upwardly to release the clamps and raise the carrier ring off the press bed, whereupon the carrier ring drive is actuated to move the carrier ring and die set out of the press. The second carrier ring with a different die set is then moved into the press. In a modification rollers take the place of the track sections 108 on the clamps 48.
