PURPOSE: A communication method between an agent and an application process is provided to test whether a corresponding application process is ready for providing information before requesting information from the application process so that the agent does not wait for an infinite response. CONSTITUTION: When an agent receives an SNMP operation message from a manager(S20), the agent analyzes the SNMP operation message and selects an application process providing information which the manager requests(S22). It is judged whether the application process selected in step S22 is ready for providing information(S24,S26). When the application process provides the information, the manager requests information from the application process in step S22 and changes it to an interruption mode and waits for a response(S28). When the application process dose not provide the information, the agent transmits a special value to the manager and performs a response for the manager's information request(S36). Information converted into an SNMP protocol is transmitted to a manager to perform a response for the manager's information request(S30,S32,S34).
