The invention concerns a method and apparatus for three-dimensional storage and display of data, using a three-dimensional storage or display medium (2), which can be switched between two stable states by physical excitation, and where the switching between the states of the storage medium is controlled by controlling the duration and/or the intensity and/or the wavelength of the excitation. The excitation is performed with at least three energy beams radiating at an angle to each other, and the energy beams are formed in an essentially planar fashion, with one dimension (thickness) of the beam substantially being equal to the corresponding dimension of a memory cell. The planar energy beam are formed from a common light source (104) distributed through a waveguide array (102, 112), and optical switches (120) are used switch a light beam on or off. The memory material is suspended in a block of solid material. |
