In a rotary offset lithographic printing machine the damping and inking rollers are moved into and out of rolling contact with the plate cylinder by means such that contact between the cylinder and the damping and/or inking rollers may be interrupted in unused or image free areas of a printing plate when carried by said cylinder. As shown in the drawings inking rollers 8, 9, 10 and 11 and damping rollers 3 are selectively lifted from the plate cylinder 1 by the surfaces such as 34 of cam plates 12, 13 and 14 mounted at each end of the cylinder. The cam plates, which through a pin-and-slot arrangement 15, 16 are adjustable peripherally of the cylinder surface, are engageable with the outer surfaces of ball bearing cam follower arrangements 18, 19 fixedly mounted on the shaft such as 17 of each inking and damping roller at each end thereof. In order that the various damping and/or inking rollers 3, 8 . . . 11 may be selectively moved out of contact with the printing plate surface on cylinder 1 at different times and/or for differing lengths of time and over differing areas of the rotation of cylinder 1, depending upon the particular size and distribution of image areas to be printed on the surface of the plate, cam plates 12, 13 and 14 of appropriate shape and angular extent may be used and each roller shaft such as 17 is formed with spaced notches 21 to locate a cam follower arrangement 18, 19 for contact with the selected plate. The arrangements 18, 19, each of which incorporates a detent 20 for engagement with the selected notch 21, may be replaced by rotatable bushings or, if smooth enough, the surfaces of the roller shafts and the cam plates may be in direct contact. |
