A process of manufacturing phenols in which alicyclic alcohols, alicyclic ketones or mixtures thereof are dehydrogenated using dehydrogenating catalysts which are formed by impregnating active carbon with a solution containing a salt of a metal of Group VIa of the Periodic Table, a salt of a metal of Group VIII of the Periodic Table and a salt of copper, heating the impregnated salts to dryness e.g. at a temperature of 350-550 DEG C. in an atmosphere of inert gas e.g. nitrogen and thereafter reducing the salts in a stream of hydrogen preferably at a temperature of 350-600 DEG C. Examples are given of the dehydrogenation of cyclohexanone and cyclohexanol and mixtures thereof using catalysts prepared from salts of nickel copper and chromium. |
