A method for producing nitrogen is claimed. A feed gas stream (1) of nitrogen and at least one volatile organic compound is cooled. Liquid nitrogen (8) is added to the cooled gas stream (7) and is vaporised by direct heat exchange with it to produce gaseous nitrogen (13) and liquid volatile organic compounds (11). These streams are passed in indirect heat exchange with the feed gas to produce the cooled gas stream and warmed gaseous nitrogen (14) which is recovered as product. Also claimed is apparatus for producing nitrogen.
