PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new method for producing 1,2-indanediols in good reaction by solving the problems in the disposal of waste and waste water, the safety of reaction, or the treatment of a large amount of solvent. SOLUTION: This method for producing the highly pure 1,2-indanediols comprises regulating the amount of added water so as to be 1.5-5 weight times as much as the amount of the indene, and carrying out on oxidation reaction at 55-90 deg.C by previously adding the water to the indenes and mixing them, and further adding an organic peroxide to the mixture.
