PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device which is high in the yield of manufacturing and is excellent in display grade and a method of manufacturing this liquid crystal display device. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal display device has a liquid crystal display panel 10 holding a liquid crystal composition 300 between a pair of substrates 100 and 200. The array substrate 100 has columnar spacers 31 holding the cell gap between a pair of the substrates and having light shieldability and color filter layers 24 (R, G and B) arranged by each of pixels in a display region 102 for displaying images. The array substrate 100 has light shielding layers SP formed by the same material as the material of the columnar spacers 31 arranged in the display region 102 in the light shielding region 41 arranged along the outer periphery of the display region 102. The columnar spacers 31 and the light shielding layers SP contain pigments having the light shieldability, which pigments are distributed centralizedly to portions of the regions in a height direction from the substrates.
