PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a membrane separator holding a high membrane filtering flow velocity while keeping the aeration quantity of air necessary for washing a membrane surface little and showing stable membrane filterability over a long period of time. SOLUTION: The membrane separator is composed of at least one vertically arranged hollow fiber membrane element and an outer wall having opening parts provided to its upper and lower parts covering the side surface of the element and the total cross-sectional area of the hollow fibers of the element in a slackened state is set to 5-50% of the area of the surface surrounded by the outer wall.
