A nucleic acid (I) that encodes an ISUM2A polypeptide (II) or its fragments, and a complement of (I) are new, where (II) has 95 % identity with sequences (S5) and (S6), both of 143 amino acids, given in the specification. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) nucleic acid probes and primers (Ia) that hybridize specifically to (I) and contain 12 consecutive nucleotides (nt) from (I) or its complement; (2) a recombinant vector containing (I) or (Ia); (3) a host cell transformed with (I), (Ia) or the vector of (2); (4) a plant transformed with (I), (Ia) or the vector of (2), or containing many cells of (3); (5) producing transformed plants able to produce seeds with altered embryonic development; (6) transgenic hybrid plants produced by crossing a plant of (6), and their parts; (7) producing seeds with altered embryonic development; (8) seeds produced by method (7); (9) a transformation product from the seeds of (8); (10) polypeptide ISUM2A and its fragments; (11) antibodies directed against (II); (12) detecting (II) by reaction with Ab; (13) a kit for detecting (II) comprising Ab and reagents for detecting a (II)-Ab complex; and (14) selecting plants having embryos altered in size and/or development. |
