In the production of carbon black from a fluid hydrocarbon, at least 500 parts by weight of barium, calcium, magnesium or strontium, or any combination of any of these, whether in an elemental or combined state, are introduced into the carbon black forming zone per million parts by weight of carbon black produced. Up to 100,000 p.p.m. and more of the substance may be used. The introduced substance may be solid, liquid or gaseous and may be dissolved or suspended in water, or in aqueous or organic media, including the hydrocarbon raw material, or suspended in vapours or gases, e.g. combustion air or fuel gas used in the process to generate combustion gases contacted with the hydrocarbon. The compounds of the metals may be inorganic, e.g. chlorides, nitrates or sulphates, specifically barium perchlorate and calcium, magnesium and strontium chlorides; or organic, e.g. salts of organic acids. The introduced substance need not be pure or refined.
|
