The invention relates to a device and a method for cleaning large crude oil tanks, especially floating-roof tanks. Said device is provided with a pump (3,127), a suction pipe consisting of at least two sections (4,4'), at least one suction arm (44,113) and at least two rotating elements (42,48,98,110,126,128,131). The pump (3,127), the control unit(10) and the first suction pipe section (4) are arranged on the tank roof, or outside the tank. A first rotating element (126,110) is arranged between the first and second suction pipe sections in an opening (21) in the tank roof, while the second rotating element (42,48,98,128,131) is arranged between the second suction section (4') and the at least one suction arm (44,113).
