Stretch, bulk, crimped, lively and fluffed cellulosic yarns are produced by impregnating a cellulosic yarn, e.g. cotton, linen or viscose rayon, with a mixture of monohydroxy oxyethylene 1,2-oxypropylene aliphatic monoethers and with a catalyzed heat-reactive cross-linking agent capable of reacting with the cellulosic hydroxyl groups, mechnically positioning the impregnated yarn in a predetermined configuration and heating to effect reaction between the cross-linking agent and cellulosic hydroxyl groups to set the fibres of the yarn permanently in this configuration so that they have an inherent tendency to assume this configuration. The yarn may be mechanically positioned in the desired configuration by means of a false twist spindle. The mixture of monoethers which may be applied to the yarns in admixture with the cross-linking agent or separately preferably in the form of an aqueous solution comprises ethylene oxide and 1,2-propylene oxide combined as oxyethylene and 1,2-oxypropylene groups preferably in a ratio at least one third part of 1,2-propylene oxide for each part of ethylene oxide by weight and the aliphatic alcohol used in preparing the monoether may contain 1-14 carbon atoms. The mixture of monoethers preferably has a molecular weight of 500-3000. The cross-linking agent may be dimethylol ethylene urea, dimethylol dihydroxy ethylene urea, dimethylol N-ethyl triazone, tris-methoxymethyl melamine, diacetoxymethyl ethylene thiourea, vinyl cyclohexene dioxide, glyoxal, glutaraldehyde, butanol hemiformal, disodium sulphatoethyl sulphone, bis-b -hydroxyethyl sulphone, methylene bis acrylamide, the diketene of glutaric acid, the bis pyridinium salt of chloromethylated glycols, tris aziidinyl phosphine oxide, tetramethylol acetylene diurein, bis hydroxyethylene urea, glycerin dichlorohydrin, dimethylol urea, diglycidyl ether of glycerol, dimethylol alkyl hydrazines, dimethylol alkyl carbamates, bis methoxymethyl uron, dimethylol oxamide, dimethylolparacresol, dimethylol acetone and formaldehyde glycol formals and mixtures thereof. Suitable catalysts are ammonium chloride, magnesium chloride, oxalic acid, zinc nitrate, amine hydrochlorides, zinc fluoroborate, zinc acetate, sodium or potassium hydroxide and triethanol amine. |
