A system and method for enabling a user to conduct electronic commerce transactions without necessarily revealing the personal identity of the user. In one embodiment the user utilizes a transaction device, such as a privacy card (205), to perform the transaction. The transaction device (205) provides a transaction device identifier that may have no apparent personal identification corresponding to the user. A secured service such as a transaction privacy clearing house (TPCH) maintains an association between the user and the transaction device and interfaces with the transaction such that the transaction is completed without revealing the user's personal identification information. In one embodiment the TPCH confirms sufficient funds to complete the transaction and transfers the funds from the user's account to the vendor of the transaction.
