PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for discriminating an optical disk which discriminate between a single layer disk and a plural layer disk by comparing a high frequency signal reflected from the optical disk with reference values being differently set according to the disk characteristics. SOLUTION: It includes stages 20 and 21 which set the prescribed reference values by detecting a prescribed first high frequency signal level for discriminating the disk-kind from the optical disk, a stage 22 which detects a prescribed second high frequency level being differently generated according to the kind of the optical disk, and stages 23, 24, 25 and 26 which judge the single layer or plural layer disk by comparing the reference values with the second high frequency signal level. Accordingly, the optical disk can be smoothly reproduced independently of the sensitivity deviation of a pickup by discriminating the optical disk, in which the high frequency signal reflected from the optical disk is compared with the reference values being differently set according to the disk characteristics.
