The method involves determining a declination value for the current position of the compass unit (3) required for correction using a mobile radio network. An identification parameter is received by a mobile radio unit (2) positively identifying the current radio network cell in which the mobile radio unit is located and is used to read a declination value for the cell from a memory (4). Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a system for implementing the method; (2) a mobile radio unit for an inventive system; (3) a compass unit.
