PURPOSE: A communication terminal capable of retrieving a word using an initial sound of the word and a word retrieving method applying the same are provided to prevent the consumption of a time required for directly inputting characters or an input error by inputting word data from a keypad of a communication terminal device, retrieving characters corresponding to the initial sound of a word arranged in the word data, and selecting the retrieved character. CONSTITUTION: A keypad(20) has keys in which one number and a plurality of characters are arranged. A database(80) stores words associated with initial sounds of the words. A word combining unit(60) retrieves characters corresponding to the initial sounds of the word successively inputted from the keypad(20) from the database(80), and detects the corresponding words. A display unit(10) outputs the words detected by the word combining unit(60). A control unit(70) controls the database(80), the word combining unit(60), and the display unit(10), and manages the transmission of data.
