PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a composite oxide for a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery, capable of being used in a broad voltage range, excellent in a charge and discharge cycle durability having a large electric capacity and an excellent low temperature operability, and having a high safetiness. SOLUTION: An oxy-hydroxy cobalt powder having a weight average particle diameter of 1-20 μm and a specific surface area of 2-200 m<2> /g, a tricobalt tetraoxide powder having a weight average particle diameter of 1-10 μm and a specific surface area of 0.1-10 m<2> /g, and a lithium carbonate powder having a weight average particle diameter of 1-50 μm and a specific surface area of 0.1-10 m<2> /g, are mixed in such a way that the weight ratio of the cobalt content of the oxy-hydroxy cobalt powder to that of the tricobalt tetraoxide cobalt powder is 1/4 to 4/1, and calcined in an oxygen-containing atmosphere, thus forming a hexagonal ferrite lithium cobalt composite oxide for the lithium cobalt secondary battery, having a weight average particle diameter of 5-15 μm and a specific surface area of 0.15-0.60 m<2> /g. |
