PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for manufacturing a surface finishing material of a decorative plywood capable of avoiding unevenness of a color due to a visual observation by using a color difference meter in a work for aligning colors of a unit lumber in the case of manufacturing the surface finishing material of the plywood from an array of the unit lumbers. SOLUTION: The apparatus for manufacturing the surface finishing material of the decorative plywood comprises a molder 10, conveying means 11, 12 and 13 provided at front and rear of the molder 10, a moisture coating means 15 and a color difference meter 16 provided at the means 13 provided at the rear side of the molder 10. The coating means 15 has a water coater for coating water on the surface of the unit lumber conveyed by the conveying means. The meter 16 receives a reflected light from the unit lumber and outputs a density of the color of the surface. The lumbers measured by the meter are aligned in the density of the colors to form a lumber block, and the block is sliced to manufacture a surface finishing material.
