A centrifuge for separating dust or like particles from a gas comprises an inner elongated body 1, Fig. 3, arranged co-axially within a rotatingly driven outer tube 6 with blades 2 to 5 extending substantially radially therebetween to propel the gas along the space between the tube and the body and arranged in a number of axially spaced, circumferential rows, the blades of successive rows forming a decreasing angle with the longitudinal axis of the centrifuge in the direction of gas flow and the angle being substantially zero for the blades 3 of the row which is nearest to the centrifuge outlet. The tube 6 which may be made of opithutic plastic material is provided with frustoconical aluminium alloy bearing rings 7 which form runways for wheels or rollers (Fig. 2 not shown) rotatably mounted, e.g. by ball bearings, on stationary spindles and provided with peripheral solid or pneumatic frusto-conical rubber tyres. One of the rollers is keyed to an electric motor shaft for driving the tube. The inlet surface of the tube 6 is continuously cleaned by running water introduced with the gas through an inlet opening 17. The dustladen water is expelled radially in a stationary casing 13 and removed at 14 while the cleaned gas passes out through a central opening in the casing. Flow-stabilising gratings are provided at 15 and 16. The Fig. 6, a vertical centrifuge is formed of metal tube sections 18-22 connected by rings 23-26 forming runways for bearing wheels 27, at least one vertical series of the wheels being keyed to a common shaft driven by an electric motor. The dustladen gas is fed tangentially into a stationary casing 29 and the dust-free gas is evacuated by pipe 30, the dust falling into an annular hopper 31. The inner elongated body is in the form of a tube 32 having a hood 33 and supported by a tube 34 forced therein and closed by a member 35 resting on a thrust bearing 36. Fig. 7 shows a number of centrifuges 38, 39, 40 arranged in series and driven at different speeds by motors 41,42,43 the centrifuge 38 being the slowest and centrifuges 39 and 40 having flared inlet ends 44, 45. A cyclone may be used in conjunction with any of the centrifuges illustrated to remove the largest particles from the gass before its passage through the centrifuges.
