The holder (1) for a road vehicle registration plate (2) is formed as a box with a rectangular base defining the support surfaace for the plate. Side walls extend outwards from the support surface and form an all-round frame. Two opposite long side walls have projections extending over the edge areas of the plate, which they firmly hold. A wall part (27) of one of the long side walls is for installing and dismantling the plate and is releasably fixed on an edge area of the holder. The wall part includes one of the projections and on its rear side facing the base has a component for snap-engagement with the holder. Components are placed near one of the wall part two longitudinal edges and enable the wall part to be fitted in two positions relatively to the holder in which the registration plate is placed.
