A method of inducing a CD8+ T response against a selected molecule by delivering the molecule via a recombinant simian adenovirus is provided. Als o provided are methods of inducing interferon-.alpha. and interferon-.beta. by delivering a recombinant simian adenovirus to a subject. The methods and compositions of the invention are particularly well suited for prophylaxis a nd treatment of infections with human immunodeficiency virus and human papillom a virus, among others, and cancer therapy.
