The second chamber (31) is pressurized through an additional passage which is in part closed off when the coupling (25) is opened. The passage lies in a hub (21) flange to which the turbine wheel is fitted (9) so the passage runs radially inwards. One of the passage bores provided lies close to a support disk (27), the disk closing onto flange side facing the piston when the coupling (25) is open. Increased pressure in chamber (31) cover chamber (29) displaces the piston (23) to transfer torque through the friction plate (33) and drive plate (3). Raised pressure in chamber (29) breaks the friction connection so torque is passed from pump and hub (21) to gear input shaft.
