Detection of the presence of substances in vital tissues by passing light of a given wavelength through the tissue. To detect the presence of substances in vital tissues, light of a given wavelength is directed at the tissue to penetrate into it. At least a part of the light emerging from the tissue is registered and the intensity of the returned light is classified by the wavelength. The characteristics of the returned light are compared with at least one reference system, to give a correlation to show the presence and/or concentration of the substance. The measurements are taken at least at two different points.
