PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To normally and stably operate an optical semiconductor element, such as the LD, PD, etc., for a long period by ensuring the airtightness of the element and, at the same time, improving the coupling efficiency of light between the element and an optical fiber. SOLUTION: A package for housing optical semiconductor element has a base body 1 having quadrangular screw fixing sections 1b extended outward from the four corners of the base body 1 and having circular through holes or arcuate notches. Each screw fixing section 1b is formed in a state where the section 1b is positioned between the extensions of the adjacent two sides of the body 1 and the joint section of the section 1b with the base body 1 is constricted. In addition, the center of the circular through hole or arcuate notch of each screw fixing section 1b is positioned on the extensions of the adjacent two sides of the base body 1 or between the extensions.
