PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a detergent composition suitable for washers which exerts an excellent detergency against stains, especially oily stains found on glass surfaces of glass and china, inhibits corrosion and deterioration of tableware and allows little attachment of scales. SOLUTION: The detergent composition for washers is prepared by compounding a maleic acid homopolymer having an average molecular weight of from 1,000 to 3,000 or a water-soluble salt of the polymer with a strongly alkaline detergent containing an alkaline agent and a sequestering agent. As the alkaline agent, at least one is selected from hydroxides, carbonates and silicates of an alkaline metal.
