PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a high quality thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer without generating a low boiling gas or a discoloration caused by a thermal deterioration, in a high yield including its recovery from a reaction pot. SOLUTION: This method for producing the liquid crystalline polymer comprises polymerizing by using (I) an aromatic hydroxycarboxylic acid consisting of the following: (Ia) a hydroxybenzoic acid and its ester derivative, and (Ib) hydroxynaphthoeic acid and its ester derivative wherein, molar ratio of (Ia)/[(Ia)+(Ib)]>=0.9}, (II) an aromatic dicarboxylic acid and alicyclic dicarboxylic acid, (III) an aromatic diol, and alicyclic diol, an aliphatic diol, or the like, and (IV) an aromatic hydroxylamine and an aromatic diamine, in the presence of an alkylating agent, and satisfying that 0.0015<=[(A)-(B)]/[(A)+(B)]<=0.006 (1), 1.01<=(D)/(C)<=1.08 (2), 0<=(E)<=20 (3) and (D)/(C)>=-0.02×(E)+1.04 (4), by taking the total number of equivalents of carboxyl groups of I, III and/or IV as (A), the total number of equivalents of hydroxy groups, amino groups, or the like, of I, III and/or IV as (B), the total number of equivalents of hydroxy groups and amino groups of the raw material monomers I, III and/or IV as (C), the used number of equivalents of the alkylating agent as (D) and the amount of a catalyst as (E).
