PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an economical carburizing treatment method by which carburizing lead time can be reduced, further, the control of the carbon potential in an atmosphere in a furnace under the reduced pressure is possible, therefore, the intrusion of carbon into a steel material caused by the direct decomposition of a hydrocarbon based gas is limited to prevent the generation of soot, and a carburizing treated layer having a proper value can be obtained. SOLUTION: In the carburizing treatment method, carburizing is performed while feeding a hydrocarbon based gas and an oxidizing gas into a furnace whose pressure is held to the reduced one. Preferably, the pressure in the furnace is 0.1 to 101 kPa, the hydrocarbon based gas to be used consists of one or more kinds selected from gaseous C3 H8 , gaseous C3 H6 , gaseous C4 H10 , gaseous C2 H2 , gaseous C2 H4 , gaseous C2 H6 and gaseous CH4 , and the oxidizing gas to be used consists of air, gaseous O2 or gaseous CO2 .
