The cuttings are oriented in a chosen end position using a manipulator which can be moved up and down and rotated about a vertical axis. The manipulator is located at the end of a conveyor belt used to align the cuttings. The planting device includes a means for separating out individual cuttings from a cutting source, a means for transporting the separated cuttings, a detection device for determining the starting position of the separated cuttings, an orientation device for moving the cuttings into a chosen end position, and a means for transferring the oriented cuttings into a cultivation medium, where they adopt a substantially vertical position.
