An elevator device comprising a car (2) adapted to be lifted and lowered along a car rail (3) installed in a shaft (1), a balance weight (5) adapted to be lifted and lowered along a balance weight rail (6) installed in the shaft (1), a winch (8) which has a sheave (9), a motor section (10) for driving the sheave (9) and a brake section (11) for controlling the motor section (10) and which is disposed at the top of the shaft (1) such that the plane of rotation of the sheave (9) is horizontal and such that the brake section (11) is positioned on the ceiling side of the shaft (1), and an inspection hole (19) formed in the ceiling of the shaft (1) and opposed to the winch (8).
