The present invention discloses a vehicle washing apparatus of the type having vertically suspended curtain-like washing elements (110) (mitter curtains), and more particularly to a means for retracting or displacing (100, 101) the mitter curtains (110) to an inactive position. When a vehicle is to be washed by the mitter curtains (110), the retractation means (100, 101) is in the closed position allowing for the uninterrupted movement of the mitter curtain (110) against the vehicle. When it is desired to have a vehicle pass through the mitter curtain apparatus without contacting the mitter curtains (110), the retractation means (100, 101) is activated to an open position, displacing the mitter curtains (110) to a position which will allow to the vehicle to pass the mitter curtains (110) without contacting them.
