A system (10) for and a method of optical scanning which provide for focusing a light beam (14) using one or more flex circuits (18), each flex circuit (18) containing an aperture (32) that is moved into or out of the outgoing optical path of a light beam (14) via an electromagnetic mechanism (33, 34, 36). The electromagnetic mechanism (33, 34, 36) includes a moving coil (36) or moving magnet (34) attached to each flex circuit (18) for positioning the flex circuit aperture (32) in or out of the outgoing optical path when the electromagnetic mechanism (33, 34, 36) is actuated by an electric current. By positioning a greater or lesser number of apertures (32) in the outgoing optical path, the final aperture (32) size may be modified, thereby adjusting the focal location and depth of field of the light beam (14). Accordingly, the scanning system (10) provides improved focusing characteristics, as well as an increased read range.
