To identify a domain participating in the stabilization of HIF-1.alpha. protein, DNA encoding the following polypeptide (A) or (B) is provided. (A) A polypeptide comprising the amino acid sequence represented by SEQ ID NO:1. ( B) A polypeptide comprising an amino acid sequence consisting of at least 16 amino acid residues in the amino acid sequence represented by SEQ ID NO:1 an d, when fused with a nuclear localization signal and another protein, imparting a stability depending on oxygen concentration to the other protein in cells carrying the fused protein.
