New N-benzyl-m-phenylenediamine derivatives of formula (I) and their physiologically-compatible, water-soluble salts are claimed: R<1> = H, 1-4C (fluoro)alkoxy, (1-4C alkyl)sulfamido-(2-4C alkoxy), (1-4C alkyl)sulfonyl)-(2-4C alkoxy), 2,4-hydroxyalkoxy, 3-4C dihydroxyalkoxy, 1-6C alkyl, 1-4C alkylthio ether, 2-4C aminocarbonylalkoxy, aminoalkyl, trifluoromethyl (CF3), trimethylylsilyl (-Si(CH3)3), 1-4C hydroxyalkyl or 3-4C dihydroxyalkyl; R<2>, R<3> = H or 1-4C alkyl; R<4>-R<8> = H, halogen, hydroxyl, 1-4C alkoxy, 2-4C hydroxyalkoxy, 1-6C alkyl, 1-4C alkylthio ether, mercapto, amino, mono- or di-(1-6C alkyl)-amino, mono- and di-(2-4C hydroxyalkyl)-amino, CF3, acetamido, acetyl, trifluoroacetyl, -Si(CH3)3, 1-4C hydroxyalkyl or 2-4C dihydroxyalkyl; or R<5>R<6> = an -O-CH2-O- bridge; R<3>4 and R<7> or R<5> and R<8> = not amino simultaneously . An Independent claim is also included for oxidative colorants for keratin fibers, which are based on a developer substance-coupler substance combination and contain compound(s) (I).
