PURPOSE: To provide an ink jet recorder and an ink jet recording method in which sheet discharge smear can be prevented efficiently through a simple arrangement. CONSTITUTION: Based on an ejection quantity of ink per unit area of a preceding recording medium discharged lastly to a sheet discharge position by a discharge means, a required period being elapsed before a recording medium being discharged subsequently is allowed to touch a specified area of the preceding recording medium. Recording speed of the following recording medium P2 is controlled such that the following recording medium does not touch a specified area of the preceding recording medium P1 within the determined period.
