A pneumatic tyre tread has circumferential grooves 12 defining ribs 10 having formed therein water-absorbing chambers 16 which obviate loss of grip or aquaplaning on a wet surface, the distance between centres of the chambers being between 0À19 and 0À5 inches at the ground-contacting surface. If of circular cross-section, the chambers have a diameter of between 0À06 and 0À19 inches, or if of non- circular cross-section, e.g. rectangular or lozenge-shaped, having an equal cross-sectional area. The chambers may increase in crosssectional area inwardly from the outer surface. Each chamber has a radial extent between 40% and 100% of the groove depth, which latter is between 0À15 and 0À25 inches. A tyre may have chambers 16 along part of a circumferential rib or along one or more ribs, the remainder of the rib or ribs being slotted as described in Specification 1,101,135.
