PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a linear motor which is simply constituted, can be reduced in size, and has sufficient thrust. SOLUTION: A plurality of permanent magnets 2-0, 2-1, 2-3, etc., are embedded in a field yoke 1 made of magnetic material with a specified pitch in the direction of length so that the polarities of the adjacent poles thereof are opposite to each other; a plurality of electromagnets 3 and 4 having predetermined pole pitchs are installed opposite to the field yoke 1 with the specified pitch in the direction of the length of the field yoke 1 with a specified gap provided between the electromagnets and the field yoke; the electromagnets 3 and 4 are sequentially excited, and thrust is thereby produced between the field yoke 1 and the electromagnets 3 and 4 by attractive force and repellent force based on the polarities among the magnetic poles of the permanent magnets embedded in the field yoke 1, the magnetic poles formed in the parts of the field yoke between the permanent magnets, and the magnetic poles formed in the electromagnets 3 and 4 by magnetization. Thus, either the field yoke 1 or the electromagnets 3 and 4 is driven.
