The device has a first transmitter/receiver unit for radar distance measurement in or on the vehicle and a second transmitter/receiver unit in a transponder unit whose position relative to the vehicle can be anywhere or varied. The first system is expanded by a dual channel data communications system. The communications microwave frequencies are chosen to give an intermediate frequency that can be processed with conventional components. The device has a first transmitter/receiver unit (1) for radar distance measurement in or on the vehicle and a second, dual channel transmitter/receiver unit (2) in a transponder unit whose spatial position relative to the vehicle can be any position or can be varied. The first system is expanded by a dual channel data communications system. The microwave frequencies for the dual channel communications are chosen so their difference results in an intermediate frequency that can be processed with conventional components in a superimposition receiver in both units.
