PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide human polymorphic epithelial mucin(PEM) that plays an important role in maturity of sperm and Alzheimer's disease and the nucleic acid encoding the human PEM. SOLUTION: The invention comprises the use of PEM as a target of male birth control and in the treatment for male sterilization and Alzheimaer's disease. This invention additionally comprises a method of selecting PEM antagonist and a method of producing a linked molecule that specifically detects PEM and provides the genes that are controlled by the PEM gene.
