PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce an optical fiber base material with less impurity and added with a required element. SOLUTION: An apparatus is equipped with a holder 10 to stand and hold a quartz pipe 2, an exhausting system 7 installed at the upper end side of the quartz pipe 2, a solution feeding system 3 installed at the lower end side of the quartz pipe 2, a solution exhausting system 4, a gas feeding system 6, heating means 8 covering a part of the circumference of the quartz pipe 2 and a traveling means 15 to travel the heating means 8 toward upper or lower direction. After a porous soot material to form the optical fiber is heaped on the inside wall of the quartz pipe 2, the quartz pipe 2 is set in the apparatus denoted as Fig. 1. After a solution is fed in the quartz pipe 2 and impregnated in the porous soot material 1, the solution is discharged and the porous soot material 1 is dried and oxidized by heating the quartz pipe 2 with the heating means 8 supplying a gas from the gas feeding system 6 to the quartz pipe 2. The steps from the impregnation of the solution to the porous soot material 1 to the oxidation of the porous soot material 1 are practiced continuously and repeatedly once or more times. |
