1,167,441. Preparing active material for lead electrodes. ACCUMULATORENFABRIK SONNENSCHEIN G.m.b.H. 7 March, 1967 [8 March, 1966], No. 10546/67. Heading H1B. [Also in Division C1] Powdered filling material for secondary cell plates is prepared by reacting powdered lead oxide with sulphuric acid wherein a powdered lead oxide is added to a reaction zone and is sprayed with sulphuric acid to promote an exothermic reaction, the lead oxide being maintained in an agitated state, and a gas is passed through the agitated mass to remove water vapour formed during reaction, the rate of injection of the acid being such that the mass remains in a non-agglomerated state. The mass may comprise a fluidized bed which is maintained in an expanded state by an upward flow of said gas stream. Additional heat, in the form of a stream of hot air, may be introduced into the reaction zone. An apparatus for carrying out the process, is shown in Fig. 1, wherein a lead oxide feed material is introduced via a pipe 3 into a container 1 and maintained in a fluidized state by compressed air supplied through pipes 12 and 13. Sulphuric acid is sprayed on to the mass from the nozzle 15. An outlet 7 is incorporated in the container and this is controlled by a flap or conical valve 6. |
