A method and system for estimating an amount of a substance (40), being released into an ambient thereby creating a toxic gas plume (30), by making multiple sensor concentration mesaurements of the toxic substance in the gas plume (28), with at least one sensor adapted to be positioned at the toxic gas plume and at multiple measurement times (32). The amount of the toxic substance released is estimated as a function of the multiple concentrated measurements (42) and the times of the toxic sensor measurements (44).
