PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coke drum which is comparatively hard to cause swelling and cracks due to ununiform cooling of the coke drum during quenching. SOLUTION: A coke drum 300 has an upper head 304, a lower section 302, and a cylindrical wall 308 having a height parallel to its longitudinal axis 315 and extending between and joined to the upper head 304 and the lower section 302. The wall includes an upper ring 310 and a lower ring 314, each of which has a height parallel to the longitudinal axis of the wall which is in a range of 0% to 25% of the height of the wall. The wall includes an intermediate ring 312 which extends between and is joined to the upper ring 310, if present, and the lower ring 314, if present. The intermediate ring has a length which is equal to a cumulative length of the upper ring 310 and the lower ring 314 subtracted from the length of the wall. The intermediate ring is free of joints which extend in the circumferential direction of the wall.
