PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording and playing device by which a program can be automatically retrieved and selected so as to prepare a play list according to liking of a user by simple operation and writing to a recording medium is possible. SOLUTION: The device is provided with a recording and playing means 8 for recording and playing auxiliary information concerning a recording medium 7 having a plurality of programs on sound and video, the auxiliary information of them and management information for playing operation. The device is provided with a category retrieving means 12 for retrieving the programs in the same category by using the auxiliary information played by this means 8. The device is provided with a play list preparing means 14 for preparing the play list for controlling the playing order of the programs by using the retrieval result of this means 12 and recording this play list in the medium 7 through the means 8.
