PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium, in which a fluctuation of a magnetization transition boundary formed in a recording layer is reduced, and a magnetic recorder using the same. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium is provided with a magnetic pattern layer 4, a intermediate layer 5, and a recording layer 6. In the magnetic pattern layer 4, units 20 repeating magnetic patterns constituted of upward and downward magnetic domains 20a and 20b are alternately and regularly formed. To record information on the recording layer 6, a magnetic domain 26 is formed in the recording layer 6 directly above the magnetic pattern repeating units 20. Since the leakage magnetic field of a track width direction generated from the magnetic pattern repeating units 20 formed in the magnetic pattern layer 4 is applied to the magnetization transition boundary 28 of the recording layer, the position of the magnetization transition boundary 28 is stabilized.
