The method involves positioning a tool electrode at a distance from a workpiece electrode zone, applying pulses between the electrodes, detecting the electrode current profile and deriving the electrode separation criterion. It involves detecting if the current profile per pulse shows an initial excess related to a comparison profile followed by a decrease to below the comparison profile and using this as a desired or minimum distance criterion. An Independent claim is also included for a device used for electrochemical material-removing workpiece machining.
