PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a belt tensioner limiting the force in a non-operating state, and having a tensioning distance and a distance available in limiting the force independent from each other. SOLUTION: This tensioner 10 for a safety belt is provided with a cylinder 12, a piston 14 slidably mounted in the cylinder, and a tractional force transmitting means 24 connected to the piston for transmitting the movement of the piston to the safety belt. The tensioner is further provided with a driving device 18 for adding the driving force to the piston to tension the safety belt. The piston 14 of the tensioner is provided with a deformation element to be engaged with the tractional force transmitting means 24.
