A digital broadcast receiver is described in which detection of digital channels, and detection of the transmission mode of such a digital channel, can be achieved in the optimum time. The receiver employs a number of preliminary checks which screen out channels that are not appropriate for digital decoding before the channels are made available to a digital signal search circuit. These checks include determining whether the signal in the channel is an analogue or a digital signal, as well as determining whether the magnitude of the signal in the channel is sufficient for it to be decoded. <??>The search circuit (30) performs digital decoding on the channels which are deemed appropriate, and preferably searches in parallel for all possible transmission modes simultaneously. As a result of these measures, a significant improvement in the time taken to detect digital signals and tune to them is achieved.

|
