PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a catalyst to obtain methacrylic acid with high yield by gas-phase catalytic oxidation of methacrolein, to provide a method for manufacturing the catalyst and to provide a method for manufacturing methacrylic acid by using the above catalyst. SOLUTION: The catalyst for manufacturing methacrylic acid contains a solid acid containing at least molybdenum, phosphorus, vanadium and copper and oxide particles having < 1 μm average particle size and containing at least molybdenum. Methacrylic acid is obtained with high yield by subjecting methacrolein to the gas-phase catalytic oxidation by using the above catalyst.
